CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS LABORATORY

CE 121                                                                                               No. of hrs/week : 01+02

                                                                                                No. of credits  : 02

Tests are conducted to develop an understanding of the physical and mechanical properties of materials used in construction.

(1)  Tests on cement:  Specific gravity, fineness, soundness, normal consistency and setting times, compressive strength of cement mortar cubes.

(2)  Tests on fine aggregate:  Specific gravity, bulking, sieve analysis - fineness modulus, moisture content, bulk density.

(3)  Tests on coarse aggregate:  Specific gravity, sieve analysis - fineness modulus, bulk density.

(4)  Tests on bricks and tiles (roofing and flooring):  Water absorption, breaking loads.

(5)  Tests on cement concrete:

     a)  Tests on fresh concrete: workability, slump, vee-bee compaction factor tests.

 b) Tests on hardened concrete:  compressive strength of cubes and cylinders, split tensile strength test, flexure test, non-destructive testing.

   c) Tests on bituminous materials:  Specific gravity, flash & fire points, penetration, softening point, viscosity and ductility tests.
