2. Concentrations of solution- weight-weight-units-percent composition, mole fraction, mole ratio, molality. Weight volume units-molarity, normality. Problems.
3. Binary liquid solutions- Raoults Law- Ideal and non-ideal solutions – solutions of non-volatile solute in liquids. Colligative properties-lowering of vapour pressure, elevation of boiling point, depression of freezing point and osmotic pressure. Solutions of gases in liquid - Henry’s law. Problems.
4. Ionic equilibria- dissociation constant – Oswald’s dilution law. Ionic product of water. Hydrolysis of salts of four types – hydrolysis constants, degree of hydrolysis. Common ion effect, solubility of sparingly soluble salts- solubility product. Redox and Non-Redox reactions. Balancing redox reactions. Problems.
5. Acid-base theories- pH-Value- Buffer solutions-buffer action, calculations of pH of Buffers. Importance of buffers. Titration-alkalimetry - acidmetry. Acid-base indicators. Theories of acid base indicators. Selection of acid base indicators. Problems.
6. Electrochemistry- comparison of electrolytic cells and electrochemical cells, single electrode potential, oxidation- reduction potentials. Standard Hydrogen Electrode. Glass electrode and pH measurement. Calomel electrode – Weston standard cell. Primary and Secondary cells- dry cell, lead storage cell and Nickel – cadmium cell, Fuel cells – Hydrogen- oxygen fuel cell. Problems.
7. Corrosion- Types of corrosion – Electrochemical theory – Differential metal corrosion, pitting corrosion, waterline corrosion, stress corrosion – caustic embrittlement. Prevention of corrosion – Cathodic and anodic protection, Inhibiters.
8. Colloids- colloidal solution (sols)- Lyophillic and Lyophobic. Preparation of sols- dispersion methods, condensation methods. Purification, Properties of sols-optical, kinetic, electrical. Stability of sols. Coagulation of sols. Protection of sols . Applications.
9. Phase rule- terms involved- one component system- water system. Two component system- silver-lead system.
10. The solid state- types of solids- isotropism, anisotropism, polymorphism, isomorphism. Elements of crystal structure – space lattice, unit cell. Types of crystal systems. Lattice dimensions. X-ray diffraction and crystal structure.
