1. Simple stresses and strains : Stress, strain, stress-strain diagrams, Hooke's Law, elastic module, Poisson's ratio, relationship among the elastic constants, working stress and factor of safety, bars of varying cross-sections, temperature stress, compound bars. 12 hrs
2. Bending moment and shear force diagrams : Bending moment and shear force diagrams for statically determinate beams subjected to various types of loads. Relationship between bending moment, shear force and load intensity. 7hrs
1. Stress in Homogeneous beams :
(a) Simple bending theory, moment of resistance, section modulus.
(b) Shear stress variation across beam sections. 7hrs
4. Torsion of circular shafts : Torsion equation, strength and stiffness of solid and hollow shafts, polar modulus of sections, transmission of power. 5hrs
5. Combined stresses : Principal stresses for two dimensional stress system. Mohr's circle of stresses. 5hrs
6. Deflection of Beams : Differential equation of the elastic curve, relationship between deflection, slope, bending moment, deflection of statically determinate beams by Mecaulay's method. 5hrs
7. Elastic stability of columns : Effective length, slenderness ratio, Euler's formula for different end conditions, Rankine Gordon formula. 4hrs
