1.FUNDAMENTAL CONCEPTS AND DEFINITIONS: Scope and limitations of Thermodynamics, thermodynamic system, state, property, change of state thermodynamic equilibrium, path, process, cycle. Zeroth law of thermodynamics and concept of temperature, temperature scale. Heat and   work  transfer.  Thermodynamic definition of displacement work –shear work, other kinds of work.

2. FIRST LAW OF THERMODYNAMICS : Statement of first law, energy – internal energy and its molecular interpretation. Steady – flow systems, application of steady flow energy equation.

3. PURE SUBSTANCE: Definition – internal energy and enthalpy of pure substance – specific heats. Properties of  pure substance, phases – equilibrium between phases – PVT surface-tabulated properties and process calculations – measurement of steam quality.

4. SECOND LAW OF THERMODYNAMICS : Limitations of the first law, heat engine, heat pump, reversed heat engines and their performance. Kelvin Planck and Clausius statement, irreversible process. Carnot cycle. Thermodynamic temperature scale.

5. ENTROPY :Clausius inequality – the property entropy, principle of increase of entropy. T.S and H.S. diagram available and unavailable energy. Helmholtz and Gibbs fuctions. Maxwells relations, Clausius – Clapeyron equation.

6. IDEAL GASES :Equation of state, the universal gas constant, internal energy and enthalpy – specific heats. Entropy change of ideal gases – reversible adiabatic and polytropic processes. Non- Reactive gas mixtures, introductions of real gases.
