Control of Respiration Learning Objectives

Be able to explain the difference between the natural rhythmicity of the heart and breathing (this may not be explicitly covered in your text book).

Be able to explain why it is important that the control of  breathing involves both automatic and conscious aspects.

Be able to list the muscles involved in both normal and hard (labored) breathing.

Be able to name three chemical factors that influence respiration.

Be able to describe the role of central and peripheral chemoreceptors in the control of breathing.

Be able to differentiate between  the stimuli and  roles of central and peripheral chemoreceptors in the control of breathing.

Be able to explain the role of thoracic mechanoreceptors (sometimes called pulmonary stretch receptors) in the control of breathing.
